An enteric-coated microspherule form of aspirin (ECM) was compared with regular aspirin (ASA) in a double-blind study involving 91 patients. The ECM preparation compared favorably to the regular ASA in all parameters investigated. Serum salicylate levels were comparable to those of ASA, gastrointestinal side effects were reduced. Forty-four of 57 patients who expressed a preference favored ECM. The ECM preparation holds promise of being a significant adjunct in the therapy of chronic arthritis.
Note:
The authors acknowledge the appreciable assistance given by Dr. C. Dean Dukes and Edith R. Hanson with the manuscript and tabular material. Grove Laboratories, Division of Bristol-Myers Company, St. Louis, Mo., supplied the medication and performed serum salicylate levels.
