Testing of Hypnotics Under Water Load

Jan Philipson M.D.1

1 Department of Internal Medicine, Regionsjukhuset, ÖOrebro, Sweden.

A double-blind study in which N-methylbutisol, a new barbiturate, was tested has been performed on 24 patients convalescing after illness. The hypnoticbears a close chemical relationship to pentobarbital, and comparisons were made with this drug and a placebo consisting of acetylsalicylic acid. The hypnotic efficiency was evaluated against provocation to awaken to empty the bladder. Pentobarbital proved to be the best of the three preparations as regards the specified criteria for an ideal hypnotic. The results of the study provide no grounds for recommending the addition of the new agent to the presently available range of hypnotics. The method of testing the hypnotic effect in which the combined subjective and objective methods were used proved to be acceptable.
