Treatment of Hyperuricemia of Neoplastic Disease

Thomas C. Hall M.D., F.A.C.C.P.1

1 Children's Cancer Research Foundation; Peter Bent Brigham Hospital; Harvard Medical School.

Thirty patients with hyperuricemia due to malignant disease were treated with oral allopurinol, usually 300 mg daily. All showed a fall in serum uric acid averaging 5.1 mg/ 100 ml at a mean time of 9.3 days after beginning of allopurinol treatment. Ten patients with "metabolic" hyperuricemia achieved an average fall of 7.3 mg/ 100 ml of serum uric acid after 11 days of 300 mg of oral allopurinol. The rapid rate of onset of response and freedom of side effects recommend this drug in all patients with hyperuricemia complicating malignancy.
