Methixene hydrochloride is an effective antispasmodic agent without the troublesome side effects commonly produced by other parasympatholytic medications when employed in effective dosages. The difference in response to this medication, compared with the response to a placebo, is not only statistically significant but also clinically impressive. Relief from abdominal pain and cramps, eructation, and "bloating," nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea was produced by methixene hydrochloride in 94 per cent of a group of 50 placebo "nonreactors."
Additional safety data were collected for 40 patients treated with methixene hydrochloride at an oral dosage of 6 mg. daily for three months. Clinical and laboratory tests revealed no deleterious effect upon function of the cardiovascular system, islets of Langerhans, liver, or kidney.
