The absorption of effervescent formulations of paracetamol and phenoxymethylpenicillin has been compared with that of other oral formulations of these drugs in normal volunteers. In both cases the rate of absorption of the effervescent preparation was more rapid and consistent than that of the plain tablet preparation. This may have important therapeutic implications, particularly in the case of paracetamol, where a rapid and predictable analgetic effect may be desired.

Acknowledgment is given to the Occupational Health Service of the Post Office and volunteers from the East Central District Office, King Edward Building, London, E.C.1. for their cooperation. The authors also wish to thank S. Heir for Carrying out the penicillin V determinations.
