The effect of injection of small quantities of prolactin into four patients with bone marrow failure was studied. Patients with chronic bone marrow failure showed some enhancement of erythropoiesis, but no effect was evident in acute bone marrow failure, presumably because of the absence of responsive stem cells.
The specific singular or multiple mechanisms of action of this anabolic hormone remains to be elucidated.
