Phenformin has previously been shown to decrease the elevation of glucose in blood following an oral glucose load. Since that effect could depend at least partially on changes in gastric emptying rate, this report describes modifications induced by phenformin on gastric emptying rate using a radioisotopic technique in five normal subjects and four patients with early diabetes. There was a highly significant reduction of gastric emptying rate in the group of diabetics. In the group of normals the effect was not statistically significant.
Note:
This study was supported in part by a Veterans Administration grant. We are grateful for the excellent technical assistance of Mr. E. Gastin.
