The effect of the benzodiazepine lorazepam on sleep variables in a population of anxious insomniacs and control spouses was studied. Electrophysiological recordings were obtained in the home environment over a five-week period. A tendency towards normalization of the sleep pattern of the insomniacs without suppression of REM sleep is reported. Home recordings proved feasible, and would seem preferable for certain research problems.
