1 Yaumatei Psychiatric Centre, Hong Kong.
A double-blind clinical trial was described in which the efficacy of a new antianxiety compound, benzoctamine (Tacitin), was compared with that of a standard compound, chlordiazepoxide (Librium), in 60 psychiatric outpatients suffering from anxiety neurosis. The starting dose was 5 mg b.i.d. or t.i.d., which was then adjusted to suit the individual patients and continued to the end of four weeks. A clinically and statistically significant therapeutic response was observed with both treatment groups which did not differ significantly in their results. The side effects of benzoctamine appeared to be more in number than those of chlordiazepoxide, but the difference did not reach statistically significant levels.
