The motivations for participation in a drug study program by prison inmates as expressed by these inmates are (1) financial remuneration, (2) contribution to helping others, (3) participation in an important project, and (4) to break the monotony of prison life.
Because of the difficulty of extracting and validating data pertaining to motivation and the indulgence in some speculation, caution is urged regarding coming to conclusions. Local conditions obviously will influence motivations. We feel that motivation in participants in clinical investigation, whether prison inmates, students, or patients, is an area requiring further study.
