The effect of the beta-blocking drug propranolol on the radioutilization of the thyroid gland in 20 euthyroid patients was studied. The 131I uptake was normal in all patients before treatment and remained unaltered by the daily administration of 40 mg propranolol for 30 to 45 days. In eight patients, the dose was raised to 80 mg/day and repeat 131I uptake was performed 30 to 45 days later; this examination, too, was not significantly different from the previous ones. These results demonstrate that propranolol in the above doses does not affect iodine uptake of the thyroid gland.
