The unusual properties of an antacid containing alginic acid, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium trisilicate, and aluminum hydroxide were investigated. Objective evidence that the antacid preparation produced a foam having neutralizing capabilities and that it would float upon the stomach contents was obtained. These effects were demonstrated in normal subjects using the Heidelberg radiotelemeter pH capsule to measure intragastric pH and by various radiographic studies.
Note:
Sincere appreciation is acknowledged to Mr. Robert Corbett, Director of Food Service, Kansas City General Hospital and Medical Center, for providing the standard meals at the appropriate time. We would also like to express our appreciation to Dr. P. A. Boyer, Jr., and Mr. S. Gitomer for their support and encouragement, and to the radiology technicians who cooperated in taking the X-rays.
