Cardiac Tolerance for Cholesteropenic Doses of Dextrothyroxine

Paul Starr M.D.1

1 Thyroid Clinic of the University of Southern California Medical Center and the Thyroid Research Laboratory of the White Memorial Medical Center, Los Angeles, California.

Ten cardiac patients have been observed at short intervals with clinical, chemical, and electrocardiographic tests for from five to ten years while taking sodium dextrothyroxine (Choloxin) in cholesteropenic daily dosage, which has ranged, in different patients, from 1 to 12 mg. No aggravation of myocardial pathology has occurred.

Sodium dextrothyroxine in "proper dosage" is not contraindicated in euthyroid or hypothyroid patients with known heart disease.
