Benzoctamine, in a daily dosage range of 30 to 80 mg, compares favorably with diazepam, 6 to 20 mg daily, in the treatment of symptoms of mixed anxiety and depression of psychoneurotic proportions. Side effects observed were related to the sedative effects of both drugs and occurred in both treatment groups with no significant differences in frequency. The present study also provides additional evidences of validity of the symptomatic volunteer subject in assessing therapeutic efficacy and side effects of antianxiety agents. Further studies are presently underway to better understand the patterns of response of symptomatic volunteer subjects and the relationship of this group of subjects to the anxious depressed patient seeking help from general practitioners and in public hospital clinics.
