In this study of 44 patients treated with clomacran, toxic side effects were observed in 11 patients. These included pigment deposits in the lens of the eye in two patients, neutropenia in one patient, and liver function abnormalities in eight patients. The liver function abnormalities and neutropenia were reversible. The neutropenia with associated severe eosinophihia was reproduced on reexposure to clomacran. Nine months after stopping clomacran, one patient had persistent pigment deposits in the lenses of both of his eyes. Photosensitivity has been noted by other observers. Careful observation of patients under study with clomacran is indicated with periodic white blood cell counts, slit lamp examination of the lens, and liver function studies. The therapeutic value of this new psychotropic agent may be outweighed by its toxicity.
